Found near the Peak District in South Yorkshire, Sheffield is a fascinating city to visit and explore. Whether you live in Sheffield or not, you may have heard of some of its unique buildings and architecture. Operating in and around the city ourselves, we know there are a huge amount of interesting buildings and architecture throughout the city. Here are our top picks:
The Cheesegrater
Officially known as Q-Park Charles Street and found in the city centre, the Cheesegrater is a multi-storey car park on the inside, but an insanely dramatic steel building on the outside. At ten storeys high, with erratic metal resembling a Cheesegrater, this building is considered quite controversial and many locals are still unsure of the motivations behind the design. Whether you love it or hate it, it certainly attracts a lot of attention and was even named the third coolest car park in the world in 2013!
Sheffield Winter Gardens
As the largest urban glasshouse in the whole of Europe, the Sheffield Winter Gardens reflects unique architectural mastery and acts as a natural haven to escape the hustle and bustle. Tall laminated timber arches complete the look of this iconic building and the wood doesn’t need preserving through uses of chemicals that could cause harm to the 2,500 plants and 150 species it houses. If you’re looking for somewhere to relax and explore in Sheffield, why not pop along?
The Diamond
This £81 million building is the Undergraduate engineering facility for the University of Sheffield. At six storeys high, this is a truly iconic addition to Sheffield’s city centre. The Diamond has a creative aluminium diamond shaped exterior and is made up of recycled glass and galvanised steel sheets. As well as being made from recycled materials, it’s also a “smart” building able to control energy management. Despite being a university building, visitors are welcome to pop in and explore providing you give the department a few days notice.
The Soundhouse
Also a Sheffield University building, the Soundhouse is used by the facility of music. No surprise there when the exterior mimics a professional sound studio. The entire exterior of this three storey building is clad with matte black rubber fixed on with stainless steel studs to create an extraordinary quilted effect. Definitely a worthy addition to Sheffield’s unique architecture.
