Architects have a huge influence on the identities of our cities and towns. They can be the lifeblood of city design and definitively shape the way that our capitals look. As trends go in and out of fashion, some architects stand the test of time. Here are just a few.
Norman Foster
British architect Norman Foster has worked across the globe and designed some of the most iconic buildings in the world. In London, Foster designed The Gherkin and City Hall, which have become major parts of London’s architecture. In Germany, he redesigned the Reichstag and created the dome as part of his design. His work has awarded him the Pritzker Architecture Prize amongst other accolades.
Zaha Hadid
The late Zaha Hadid is certainly one of the most formidable female architects in the history of the world and was the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Named the ‘Queen of the curve’, Hadid concentrated on giving architecture more expression by innovating curves and brave new angles in architecture. Some of her best work includes the London Aquatics Centre, The Galaxy SOHO in Beijing and the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Antoni Gaudi
Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi is the designer responsible for the Sagrada Familia; arguably Barcelona’s most iconic building. The Roman Catholic church has become the epitome of neo-Gothic architecture and although it’s still under construction, it is recognised as one of Europe’s architectural marvels.
Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright, the American architect and interior designer, designed over 1,000 buildings and placed a particular focus on harmonising buildings with their environments. This principle reached its peak with the construction of Fallingwater in Pennsylvania in 1937 which was built partly on top of a waterfall.
