Scaffolding is a job that always brings with it a number of health and safety dangers which must be minimised. Winter, however, is a season where you need to take additional care as there are a number of different weather-related factors that can increase scaffolding working hazards.
The Additional Risks To Consider
Bad weather conditions such as rain, ice and snow can seriously affect the speed and safety of a construction team through fatigue, illnesses and more.
Slipping and falling
Probably the biggest risk to safety caused by winter are potential falls caused by slippery surfaces. Rain, snow and ice on wooden panels or bare metal is a danger that has to be dealt with. Strong winds during storms are also an obvious safety risk when operating at great heights.
What To Do
Monitor the weather
Keeping one eye on the BBC’s weather forecast is a good method of avoiding the worst of what winter has to throw at you. A heavy downpour of rain, icy surfaces during the morning or potential snowfall are big red flags to a scaffolder, so being able to postpone work until these dangers have been reduced is a good idea.
The cold and rain can adversely affect the productivity and health of any scaffolding worker, so it is important for all workers to have regular breaks.
Increase health and safety checks
A key part of any health and safety scaffolding regime should include regular safety checks – but these should be stepped up in winter! Lower temperatures and adverse weather conditions can put greater stresses on equipment while raising the risk of materials not acting as they should. Scaffolding frames should be risk assessed more often than usual and the structure should be cleaned regularly to prevent ice or mud building up.
Reduce slipping risks
Slip-resistant boards should be placed on surfaces that are at risk of slippage. All workers should ensure that they wear their harnesses where appropriate, as well as consider upgrading their footwear.
