Over the years, architecture has changed dramatically and continues to do so. The principles and priorities are now far removed from where they were decades and centuries ago and as technology continues to rapidly develop, so to do the ways that we design buildings and the reasons that we do so.
Sustainability
As with many things nowadays, sustainability and environmental responsibility have come to the fore when it comes to architectural design. With populations constantly ballooning all over the globe and stories of climate disaster constantly on the news, architects have been inspired to always make the most of the materials they work with and to create buildings that are as energy efficient as possible. For example, entire villages are now popping up that are carbon-neutral and powered entirely by sustainable energy.
Up, Up, Up!
Also fuelled by rising population, architects in urban areas are continuing to build upwards rather than out. To facilitate more and more people moving to cities, more skyscrapers are being erected, but they’re also being built with sustainability in mind. One example of this is vertical farms which bring agriculture back into the city by giving space to residents to build some of their own crops whether they’re on the top or bottom floor. This also helps to improve drainage, avoid floods and improve air quality for the residents.
Connecting With Tech
There’s no stopping the constant drive of tech progression and architects are beginning to recognise this. With this principle in mind, more ‘smart’ homes are being constructed which dovetail tech and living together seamlessly. One of the ways that this is already happening is through the automated adjustment of temperature and brightness in the home.
Augmented Reality Planning
Before a building is completed, lots of planning has to happen and architects will have to present those plans to the clients they’re working with. To give clients a better and more inclusive experience, augmented reality plans are starting to be used. This means that tech is allowing clients to walk through a digital version of the plans which can unfold in front of their very eyes or via their phones.
